The 2016 Vintage was hot and dry, with erratic rains creating the right amount of soil moisture, with the fall being hotter and drier than normal. The harvest was late to give enough hang time for the grapes to achieve the sugars, acids and ripeness to make a great wine. It is light in colour but packed with flavour. With the longer growing season. It truly reflects the terroir of Lake Erie North Shore, and in particular, Essex County.
Aged in French and American oak barrels for 18 months, you will find a long, smooth finish. On the nose dark fruit, plum, chocolate, and deep ripe cherries may be detected. The palate tastes of baked Bing cherries and pencil shavings with some mineral notes.
This wine is very versatile. It pairs well with beef, pork or chicken, all cooked in rich dark sauces and served with root vegetables or rosemary roasted potatoes. For dessert, enjoy a glass of Merlot Reserve with milk chocolate mousse.
